What is a Voltage Converter?
A voltage converter/transformer is an electrical device that takes the electricity from the wall outlet and converts it into the energy required by the electric item that is being used.

What are the different types of voltage converters?

For electronic items that use 110 volts to operate, this will convert a 220 volts power source down to 110 volts.
Step up Voltage Converters
For electronic items that use 220 volts to operate, this will convert a 110 volts power source up to220 volts.

How do you select the right voltage converter?
The first thing you need to do is identify what voltage your electronic item uses (110 or 220 volts). For example, North America uses 110 volts as its power source while most of Europe and Asia use 220 volts. Second, you need to identify how many watts your electronic items need in order to operate. If you can only find information in amps, you can convert the amps into watts by multiplying the amps by volts (Ex. 10 amps X 110 Volts = 1,100 Watts). Please keep in mind that it is recommended that you purchase a converter with wattage capability that is 25-30 % over the wattage you need in order to avoid overworking the converter, which will lead to diminishing the life of the converter faster. In addition, using a converter with higher wattage capability will minimize your chances of overloading the converter. For example, if your electronic item requires 1,100 watts to operate, you need a converter that can handle 1,430 watts or higher. Please note that exceptions apply for motorized equipment such as kitchen appliances. For motorized equipment, it is recommended that you use a voltage converter that can handle double the wattage your electronic item requires. For example, if your motorized equipment requires 1,100 watts to work, you need a converter for 2,200 watts or higher. The reason for this is that when motorized equipment are turned on it rushes more electricity into it than it actually requires to operate. This happens only for the first fraction of a second the appliance is turned on, but it is enough time to damage your voltage converter.
