Product Spotlight: Braun Oral-B TriZone 1000 Electric Toothbrush

You know that brushing and flossing are important for strong, healthy teeth and gums, but you may not know that an unhealthy mouth—especially if you have gum disease—can increase your risk for serious health conditions.

Then there is the pain and expense of dental work like fillings, crowns, root canals, tooth extractions, and veneers—the list goes on.

Neglecting your teeth and gums can add up to big costs over time, and even the best dental insurance doesn’t cover everything. Consider this: In 2013, Americans who had out-of-pocket dental expenses dished out an average of $707 that year alone, according to a report by the American Dental Association (ADA).1

It’s not a stretch to say that some Americans will spend tens of thousands of dollars on dental work over the course of their lifetime. Good oral hygiene can help prevent problems like gum disease and tooth decay, sparing you from painful and expensive procedures and treatments down the line.

We’ll talk more about the importance of oral hygiene ahead, and we’ll highlight the advantages of using an electric toothbrush versus a manual brush. Before we do, allow us to introduce our spotlight product, the Braun Oral-B TriZone 1000, one of the best rechargeable electric toothbrushes on the market today.

The Braun Oral-B TriZone 1000 Provides a Deep, Fresh-from-the-Dentist Clean

Maybe you’ve used an electric toothbrush in the past or you have one now, but you’ve never used one like this before. What sets the TriZone apart is its unique brush head which, as the name suggests, is separated into three distinct zones, which include:

  • Zone 1: The angled tip of the brush, designed to access hard-to-reach areas of the mouth, including the back teeth; this segment of the brush pulsates in a sweeping motion to clean teeth thoroughly.
  • Zone 2: This zone includes non-sweeping bristles that pulsate on the surface of teeth to help break up plaque build-up and clean teeth.
  • Zone 3: This zone features sweeping and pulsating bristles that reach deep between teeth, stimulating the gums and cleaning the whole mouth.

Unlike other electric toothbrushes that have a simple vibrating brush head, the TriZone brush head features stationary, sweeping, and pulsating bristles to reach and clean every tooth at every angle.

The TriZone is able to do what manual brushing simply cannot. While the average person is able to perform around 300 strokes per minute with a manual toothbrush, the TriZone pulsates 40,000 times and sweeps 8,800 times per minute.

Additional features of the TriZone include:

  • Built-in timer with 30-second intervals for each quadrant of the mouth to ensure you’re brushing for the recommended amount of time
  • Pressure sensor that detects when you’re brushing too hard and stops pulsations (brushing too hard can lead to problems—more on that later)
  • Rechargeable handle that lasts up to seven days per charge, depending on use

The TriZone rechargeable handle is also designed to fit the Oral-B FlossAction, 3DWhite, Sensitive Clean, and Precision Clean rotating brush heads, so you can customize your brushing routine.

Affordable Solution for the Whole Family

Like all Oral-B toothbrush heads, each TriZone replacement head comes with a colored ring that fits onto the base of the head. This allows you to distinguish between different people’s brush heads. There’s no need to buy individual units for each member of the family—mom and dad can share a single rechargeable handle, and the kids can share their own, too!

Still not convinced electric toothbrushes are better than manual brushing? Read on to learn why power toothbrushes really are the superior choice.

Electric Toothbrush vs. Manual Brushing

Manual toothbrushes can get the job done, but only when you use them the right way. Brushing your teeth manually requires more focus and attention—you need to brush for at least two minutes and remember to brush the front, back, and top of each tooth. It’s also important not to brush too hard, as this can damage the teeth and gums. Manual brushing is just more challenging, especially for kids—it’s easy to miss hard-to-reach areas.

By contrast, electric toothbrushes cover a larger area more gently in less time. They’re generally more efficient than manual toothbrushes (300 strokes per minute versus 40,000 pulsations and 8,800 sweeps per minute with the Oral-B TriZone). In addition to simply cleaning teeth more effectively and efficiently than manual brushing, electric toothbrushes are:

  • Helpful for those who have trouble using their hands
  • Great for kids—they’re more fun and easier to use
  • Ideal for people with braces or other orthodontic hardware, effectively cleaning in and around metal parts
  • Good for careless brushers who don’t spend enough time brushing or getting at hard-to-reach places
  • Good for people who brush too hard

Let’s talk about that last point—brushing too hard.

Brushing your teeth vigorously seems like a good thing, but it can damage your teeth and lead to gum recession, especially if you use a medium- or hard-bristled toothbrush. Recessed gums can expose the sensitive root of the tooth, which, in turn, can lead to increased tooth sensitivity and cavities on the root.

In many cases, exposed roots from brushing too hard will need to be covered up with composite resin fillings called buccal (pronounced like buckle) fillings; buccal refers to the outer surface of the tooth that faces the gums. These fillings are expensive and permanent.

An electric toothbrush like the Oral-B TriZone can make a huge difference for those who are prone to brushing too hard. The gentle pulsations and sweeping motions of the TriZone make it virtually impossible to brush too hard—the TriZone detects when you’re applying too much pressure and automatically stops pulsating to remind you.

The Importance of Oral Hygiene for Overall Health

While it’s common knowledge that that poor oral hygiene can lead to problems like dental cavities, bad breath, and periodontal (gum) disease, it may seem surprising that problems with the teeth and gums could contribute to serious health problems elsewhere in the body, yet that’s exactly what the research suggests. Here are three surprising conditions that poor oral health may contribute to:

  • Heart Disease: Multiple studies have shown a connection between heart disease and periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is associated with chronic inflammation, which could contribute to the development of coronary heart disease (CHD), possibly increasing the risk of heart attack or stroke.2 The more severe the (periodontal) infection, the greater the risk appears to be.
  • Pregnancy Complications: A striking 60-75% of pregnant women have gingivitis, which makes it especially important for these women to practice good oral health. Infants of mothers who have serious dental problems are more likely to develop cavities, and poor oral health during pregnancy is associated with low birth weight and preterm birth. Researchers suspect this could be due to either heightened levels of inflammation or bacteria that enter the bloodstream and reach the placenta, inducing an inflammatory response.3
  • Erectile Dysfunction (ED): The evidence is still being gathered, but there may be a link between periodontitis and erectile dysfunction. In one study of a group of patients aged 30-40, 53% of patients with periodontitis also had ED, while only 23% of those who didn’t have periodontitis had ED.4,5

Additional conditions that may be associated with poor oral health include kidney disease, dementia, ulcers, diabetes, and even some types of cancer.6-11

By now it’s clear that good oral hygiene is important not only for a beautiful smile and fresh breath but for overall health and well-being. You only get one set of teeth—keep them healthy and strong for a lifetime.
