Not everyone has the space or the desire for a large-scale home theater system, which is where the JVC EX-D11 comes into play. Combining a small size, elegant design, and topnotch audio and video quality, the system accommodates a variety of digital formats while fitting beautifully in a space-challenged bedroom or kitchen. The system is structured around JVC's Hybrid Feedback digital amplifier--a highly efficient design that generates high power output and low distortion levels. The amp drives 20 watts per channel into the EX-D11's pair of full-range bass-reflex speakers, creating a pleasing, warm sound for movies and music. All you need to complete the home theater setup is a TV.
The EX-D11's main unit includes a progressive scan DVD player that supports DVD Audio, DVD Video, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, CD, CD-R/RW, SVCD, VCD, and MP3/WMA (on CD-R/RW or DVD-R/RW) formats, while offering such playback features as 99-track programming, repeat play, and random play. The progressive scan function is particularly satisfying, as it creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
What truly sets the EX-D11 apart, however, are its solid cherry-finished speakers, each of which features a solid wood speaker cone. Wood is an ideal speaker material, as its acoustic properties deliver a warm, natural sound. But it's also difficult to press wood sheets into cone shapes without cracking the wood. JVC overcame this problem with an unlikely solution: sake, or Japanese rice wine. JCV engineers discovered that when soaked in sake, a birch wood sheet becomes soft and pliable enough to press into a split-free speaker cone. As a result, each speaker houses a 3.19-inch wood cone mid/bass driver that delivers an inviting, realistic audio performance. Listeners can also remove the speakers' black, semi-transparent grilles to show off the birch wood material.
Meanwhile, listeners can plug a digital audio player, such as an iPod or iRiver MP3 player, into the system's front auxiliary input. Once connected, the system immediately detects signals from the portable player, turns on the power, and switches the source to auxiliary, so you don't need to fiddle with the remote to find the correct source. And thanks to the USB PC link, you can stream music directly from your PC to the EX-D11, including MP3 and WMA files or Internet radio stations.
Though the system's default sound is pleasing by itself, the EX-D11 also offers such enhancements as JVC's 3D-Phonic sound, which creates a surround sound effect through two speakers; two-channel Dolby Digital and DTS decoding; and a clear voice function that enhances the dialogue in a DVD.
Additional features include an AM/FM tuner, a clock with three preset alarms and a sleep timer (the alarm wakes to a CD or radio), ID3 tagging (shows MP3 title and artist information on the screen), electronic bass and treble controls, a display dimmer, and a wake-up function that gradually increases the alarm's volume level as you stir into consciousness. The EX-D11, which makes a stylish addition to almost any household, is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
